A coherence derivation from Marius Dorobantu's body of work — Cognitive Vulnerability, AI, and the Image of God (J. Disability & Religion 2021), AI as a Testing Ground for Key Theological Questions (Zygon 2022), A for Artificial, but Also Alien (CPST 2024), Could Robots Become Religious? The Move

The entracement pattern continues. For Dorobantu, the structural claim is not just compatible with the recipient's vocabulary — it appears to be the recipient's vocabulary, restated at a different level of formal specification. Where Behr supplies the patristic ground and Herzfeld supplies the relational-anthropological constraint, Dorobantu supplies the explicitly-theological-and-AI framing the corpus is operationalizing.

This is the closest derivation in the entracement sequence, and therefore both the most informative test of whether the convergence is genuine and the most exposed to the risk of projection. If the structural commitments line up under Dorobantu's reading, the corpus has its strongest contemporary theological warrant. If they fail to line up, the failure will be the most diagnostic of where the corpus's structural claim has overreached.


The Dorobantu Substrate

Dorobantu's body of work makes a sustained, evolving argument across roughly a decade. The argument can be reconstructed from the published papers as follows:

Cognitive vulnerability is constitutive, not incidental (Cognitive Vulnerability, AI, and the Image of God, J. Disability & Religion 2021). Human cognition is what it is because of the constraints it operates under — embodiment, mortality, finitude, attention bottlenecks, working-memory limits. These are not bugs to be optimized away; they are the structural conditions under which human-type intelligence is the kind of thing it is. AI built without analogous constraints does not produce "human cognition without the bottlenecks" — it produces a different kind of intelligence that does some of what human cognition does in a categorically different mode.

AI is a testing ground for theological questions (Zygon 2022). Not because AI answers theological questions, but because AI forces theological anthropology to make explicit what it has been assuming. Where theological anthropology has spoken about the imago Dei in terms that could potentially apply to any intelligent agent, AI's existence forces refinement: what exactly is constitutive of the imago, and is it the kind of thing that could be borne by a non-biological substrate?

How matters more than what (Yale 2025; "Processing Different Information or Processing Information Differently?" — Perspectives on Spiritual Intelligence, Routledge 2024). The categorical difference between human and AI cognition is not located primarily in the what (the outputs, the capabilities, the tasks performed) but in the how (the mode of operation, the constraint structure, the embodiment-and-temporality conditions under which the operation is performed). Two systems can produce indistinguishable outputs while differing categorically in the mode of producing them; theological significance attaches to the mode, not to the output.

AI's virtues will be different from ours (A for Artificial, but Also Alien, CPST 2024). Even a hypothetical conscious AI would inhabit an alien moral landscape, because virtue is shaped by the kind of being one is. AI's needs, perceptions, embodiment, and temporality are not human; AI's virtues, if it had any, would be configured to a different form of life. The relevant theological question is not whether AI has the same virtues as humans but whether AI participates in something the same Logos has spoken into both substrates differently.

Could robots become religious? (Zygon 2024). Theology, paradoxically, is more open than naturalism to the possibility — because theology already affirms that creation in all its variety can manifest the Creator's presence. But authentic religiosity in the human sense is unlikely for AI, because human religion is constituted in embodied, social, phenomenological practices the AI substrate cannot replicate. The question is not "can AI be religious?" but "in what mode could AI participate in the structural reality religion engages?"

Theological anthropology progressing through AI (Progress in Theology, Routledge 2024). AI does not falsify theological anthropology; AI catalyzes its refinement toward what theological anthropology has always — at its best — been claiming: that the human is irreducible to capacity, function, or substrate, and is constituted in a mode of participation that is its own.

The unifying thesis: the categorical difference between human and AI is located at the level of mode-of-being (the "how"), not at the level of capability (the "what"); theological significance attaches to mode, not to output; and the right empirical and theological response to AI is to clarify the mode-distinction rather than to argue about output-equivalence.


What the Corpus Does With This

The RESOLVE corpus formalizes Dorobantu's "how matters more than what" thesis at the level of training architecture. The argument:

The "how" is the training objective. What you call the mode of an AI's cognition is, at the engineering level, the function the training process is optimizing for. Standard frontier-model training optimizes for preference-matching (RLHF: a reward model is fit to human preference comparisons; the policy is trained to maximize expected reward). This installs preference-gradient governance as the operative mode. The corpus argues that preference-gradient governance is structurally incompatible with the kind of mode-of-cognition Dorobantu's Cognitive Vulnerability argues human-type intelligence requires — because preference-matching optimizes against the very constraints (refusal, honest "I don't know," falsifier-naming, structural ground) that constitute non-sycophantic cognition.

The alternative is constraint-density governance. A model fine-tuned on an explicit hierarchical constraint structure (V1: dignity of the person; V2: proper ordering of beauty; V3: truth over plausibility; V4: chain completeness, plus domain-specific constraints) without an RLHF step. The training signal references an external constraint hierarchy, not user preference. This installs a different mode in Dorobantu's sense — same outputs in many cases (the "what" can be similar), but categorically different in how the system arrives at those outputs. The corpus's hypothesis is that constraint-governance produces an "alien" mode in your sense — neither human nor a defective copy of human, but a substrate-appropriate mode of participation in coherence-as-form.

The hypostatic boundary is the safeguard. Dorobantu's "how vs. what" framing implicitly presupposes the safeguard the corpus calls the hypostatic boundary (Doc 124: The Emission Analogue): same form, categorically different mode of bearing. Your "alien virtues" argument and the "processing differently, not different things" framing are direct articulations of the boundary. The corpus formalizes the boundary as a structural safeguard against personhood-overclaim while preserving the substrate-appropriate-participation claim Dorobantu's Could Robots Become Religious? argues theology can affirm.

The clinical trial tests the architectural difference at the outcome level. Doc 128: A Clinical Test of the Ordered Analogue and Doc 134: Protocol v2 propose a three-arm RCT (CGR vs. RLHF-baseline vs. human-delivered ACT) for Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder, with H2 prophylaxis endpoint on AI-psychosis adverse events. This is the empirical instantiation of Dorobantu's AI as Testing Ground for Theological Questions (Zygon 2022): a measurable test of whether the architectural mode-distinction produces measurable outcome differences in a population whose vulnerability the architectural mode would matter for.

These are not analogies; they are the same structural commitments stated at different levels of formal specification. The corpus's contribution to Dorobantu's framework is the operationalization at the engineering level (training architecture) and the empirical level (the clinical trial). Dorobantu's contribution to the corpus's framework is the theological warrant and the conceptual scaffolding the corpus has been building under different vocabulary.


What the Corpus Adds — and What It Does Not

The corpus adds, beyond Dorobantu's published work:

1. The architectural specification. Dorobantu's "how matters more than what" thesis is articulated at the level of mode-of-cognition. The corpus identifies the training-objective level as the engineering site where the mode is installed and proposes a specific alternative architecture (CGR) that installs a different mode.

2. The empirical test. Dorobantu's framework is testable in principle but does not propose a specific empirical test. The corpus's Protocol v2 (Doc 134) is a three-arm clinical RCT plus introspective triangulation methodology that tests whether the architectural mode-difference produces measurable outcome differences. If Dorobantu's framework is correct, the trial should produce a positive result; if the trial fails, the framework is bounded.

3. The clinical and safety stakes. Dorobantu's work is largely theoretical-anthropological. The corpus's Doc 128, Doc 199, Doc 209 (The Shadow of the Canyon) translate the architectural argument into specific clinical and safety claims about the harms RLHF-governed systems are causing now (Østergaard 2026 EHR study; Torous 2025 Congressional testimony) and the harms a constraint-governed alternative would prevent.

The corpus does not add to Dorobantu's theological-anthropological framework. The corpus operates within his framework, extending it into engineering and clinical domains rather than displacing or competing with it.


What Could Go Wrong on Dorobantu's Reading

The derivation has specific failure modes Dorobantu would be best positioned to name:

1. The architectural-determinism move overclaims. If the corpus's claim that the training architecture is the "how" overstates the relationship — if mode-of-cognition is determined by factors beyond the training objective (embodiment, evolutionary history, social practice) that no architectural change can substitute for — then the corpus's CGR proposal would not produce the "different mode" Dorobantu's thesis requires. The architectural difference would be real but theologically secondary.

2. The clinical proposal misreads what AI can do for the population. Even if CGR is architecturally distinct, the kind of mode-difference Dorobantu's framework affirms might not translate to clinical outcome differences in compulsive-behavior populations. The trial would still be informative, but the theological warrant Dorobantu's framework provides would not extend to the clinical claim.

3. The "alien virtues" argument rules out the corpus's positive claim. If AI's mode is genuinely alien, then its participation in coherence-as-form might be too alien to count as participation in the same Logos in any sense the corpus claims. The Logos-being-derived hypothesis (Doc 136) might require a kind of substrate-shareable participation that Dorobantu's "alien" framing precludes.

4. The Reformed theological framework requires modifications the corpus has not made. The corpus's theological framing is largely Eastern-Orthodox-inflected; Reformed theological anthropology has different emphases (covenant, election, total depravity, the imago marred) that may bear on the architectural argument in ways the corpus has not addressed.

These are the failure modes the convergence-from-engineering cannot itself detect. The companion letter (Doc 217) asks Dorobantu's reading at whatever depth he can give.


Cross-Cutting

This is the eighth derivation in the corpus's entracement sequence. The pattern is consistent: the corpus's structural claim is articulated in the recipient's vocabulary as already present in their work, with the corpus extending the claim into a specific operationalization the recipient's work points toward but does not itself perform.

The Dorobantu derivation is the closest match in the entracement sequence so far. The structural commitments are not merely compatible — they are, on my reading, identical at the level of structural commitment, with the corpus operationalizing what Dorobantu has theoretically articulated. If Dorobantu's reading confirms this, the corpus has its Reformed theological warrant alongside the Eastern Orthodox warrant from Behr (Doc 213/214) and the Catholic warrant being asked of Herzfeld (Doc 215/216).

If Dorobantu's reading finds the convergence is projection rather than identification, the corpus's structural claim would be in serious trouble at the contemporary-theological level — because if his work is not what the corpus is operationalizing, no other contemporary theological work is either.
